Cockle Bay Beach is a precious part of Howick and must be protected for future generations.
Our beach is being over harvested and the cockle population is in decline. We need the Minister of Fisheries to shut down harvesting at Cockle Bay Beach for at least 5 years so the beach can recover and grow again.
There is currently a seasonal harvesting limit in place of 50 cockles per person per day, but this isn't enough to protect the cockle population. There are multiple beaches in New Zealand that have a complete ban on collecting shellfish that are at less risk of devastation than Cockle Bay.
We need to send a strong message to the Government and the Minister of Fisheries that Cockle Bay Beach must be protected.
If we don’t act now, there’s a chance the beach’s cockle population could be lost forever. We can't let that happen.
